To truly enter into salvation, which means to be born again, we must first acknowledge our sin and then change our mind about what we have been believing (repent). Giving up our loyalty to the lie means we acknowledge, (confess) that those lies have been the root of our sin and our separation from God. Our ignorance to the power the lie has over us is what holds us captive in the strongholds the Enemy uses to destroy us. Jesus said repent and believe the gospel, for the Kingdom of God is at hand.
